It is for the 14th time that the Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź hosts participants in the International Triennial of Tapestry, an exhibition whose nature is that of a competition, featuring the achievements of artists creating fabrics and textiles from all over the world. 131 artists representing 50 countries participate in this year’s event.
The exhibits shown are differentiated, and they range from classical wall fabrics to spatial forms or even installations; from heavy tapestries to lightweight openwork fabric; from figurative and representational forms to abstract ones.
The Łódź Triennial is the oldest, the biggest and the most prestigious exhibition worldwide (after withdrawal of organisers of similar exhibitions promoting contemporary fabrics and textiles in Lausanne and in Kyoto at the beginning of the 1990s). Within the framework of the 13 events held so far, since 1972, as many as over 1,000 artists from 68 countries have had an opportunity to exhibit their works. The Polish art of creating fabrics and textiles enjoys a well-earned reputation and arouses interest worldwide. The artists whose input towards achieving such a favourable rating has been considerable are Łódź-based graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts.
